Canon EOS 600D vs 550D Is it really better
There are no doubts that the Canon EOS 550D was a very good all round camera which allowed you to progress comfortably from an absolute beginner to a serious enthusiast. Its successor, Canon EOS 600D is likewise of a similar nature with featuring a new shooting mode as well as a vari-angle LCD. The main question is that whether the Canon EOS 600D is better to worth the extra costs over the Canon EOS 550D.
By comparing the specs, there is not much difference between the two cameras in terms of performance. They have the same AF system, metering system, ISO sensitivity range, sensor, shutter and even the same movie output. So let's take a look at what's introduced into the Canon EOS 600D beyond vari-angle LCD.
One of the advances in the EOS 600D was the Basic+ mode where the camera is basically the previous ''Green Box'' (Auto) mode. Perhaps they've improved the scene recognition algorithm but after shooting a while in that mode, I could hardly feel any difference.
Creative Filter Effects
Olympus has the prattling about this for a long while and iPhone users are really happy to have it on their mobile phone before sharing on their Facebook or Twitter. When shooting with a DSLR, I felt that images are better off edited on the computer. If you are not interested in getting good images out, maybe a DSLR is not that necessary.
Built-in wireless flash control
Would I love this feature if this was my first Canon. Yes, eventually. If you are a beginner (and likely to be using built-in flash) or mainly getting this camera for its video mode (nice!), you will no doubt find the feature obsolete. However, once you start experimenting with external flash, the built-in flash control will start opening up possibilities without troubling to worry about remote triggers and suchlike. This feature definitely makes this a good camera to ''grow'' into.
Video Snapshot technology
This collage of mini-clips is an interesting feature. If you are shooting lots of different locations or subjects, you can easily create a montage movie clip of your day's shooting. For those who want to use the video footage without doing too much editing or processing, this is the right feature.
Movie Digital Zoom
Another superb movie related feature is the 3-10x digital zoom on the Canon EOS 600D. This zoom retains Full HD quality so that you won't suffer from image degradation. This feature allows you to take your existing zoom lenses and extend your focal reach significantly without requiring buying longer more expensive lenses.
Is Canon EOS 600D worth the investment?
The answer for this is simple. If you are only shooting stills, you would probably want to stick with Canon 550D or even Canon 1100D. However, once the issue of video is considered, the extra features and the use of the vari-angle LCD makes it a very good choice. If you are a 550D owner, you are more likely hoping for a firmware upgrade and 60D (as an upgrade option if you need the vari-angle LCD) rather than considering the 600D though.
